Hang Glider and Paraglider pilots from all over Western Canada showed up in Lumby a week early to practice the race courses around the 10k rectangle and the 25k triangle over the village and valleys of Lumby BC Canada, as part of Lumby Days 2008. This flying event actually started as an annual Lumby Air Force event sponsored by Molsens on Lumby Days in 1976 and was changed to more of a race format in 2005.
The Lumby Valley, at 1600 ASL, has been blessed with, normally light winds a semi arid climate and many small and large thermal generating mountains, 3000'- 6200' ASL . Saddle Mountain being the lowest and Silver Star Ski Resort being the highest. Coopers is over half way up Silver Star at 3450 ASL and Saddle is across the valley from Coopers. Check out the course on Google Maps or email me for the .KMZ file.
Many good flights were had in the warm up rounds.
Day one started out very unusual for this time of year with early SW winds.
Task one was started from Saddle Mountain, across the valley from the main valley launch at Coopers, to take advantage of the wind direction. Saddle Mountain has been used for foot launched flying for over 34 years and is within easy glide of the Freedom Flight Park landing zone. A task was called that took pilots around the 3 humps on the Saddle and turned into a challenging race because of the extra wind. The stronger winds held back until after the Paragliders got away, then the winds picked up to much to be safe to let the Hang Gliders go.
Day Two was called at the main valley launch, Coopers, and all pilots got into the valley rectangle racing. Coopers faces SE and has launches available for
South , South East, East, and North East
so its always an early start here.
Conditions were not perfect yet many pilots improved their positions in the standings as a complete round was scored for PG and HG.
The spot landings were exciting as many pilots were concentrating a little extra knowing that cash was being awarded.
Kamron Blevins then demonstrated the impressive slow speed flying charateristics of North Wing's Light Soaring Trike with his specially designed Stratus wing to the many curious flyers and spectators. He put on a great show.
As usual, Saturday evening was Dine and Dance and Pilot Connect time so "The GIANT FIRE OF LIGHT AND LIFE" was lit in honor of all the spirits that helped make this event safe and possible at the Freedom Flight Park. Gratitude was given to my deceased parents Denise and John for the property and the fire wood and my Grandfather and Great Grandfather who had the vision to come to this property in1908.
The Greek Dinner was served just before Sazacha Red Sky, www.SazachaRedSkyMusic.com , opened up the show with a number of original songs, in honor of her late son who was suppose to open the show. Then the John Noren Band, www.JohnNoren.com played some hot dancing tunes and it all wound up with a big Flyers Jam!
On Sunday June 14th 2008 the conditions went from good to great for this valley. When I filed the NOTAM, TC would only allow 10,000 feet however I got them to agree to a special of 14,000 feet with some short notice if conditions were great. This day I called the notice and over 70 pilots (20 free flyers) from all over western Canada and NW USA launched from Coopers and filled the Lumby Valley sky for hours on end with many at altitudes over 10,000 ft. in light and variable winds. The task was 2 times around the 10k course and once around the 25k course for PG pilots and 3 times around the 10k course and twice around the 25k course for HG pilots. The race always puts extra pressure on even the best pilots as speed to goal wins the day. Many of the competitors chose to leave lift early in hopes of making better times. For some it paid off, for others not.
This was a fun filled and exciting meet and a generous amout of skill, judgment and luck was required to win this event. Pilots were also encouraged to go for the cash spot landings in the Freedom Flight Park again, one mile north of town on the Mable lake road.
When all the flying was done...
$2600.00 was awarded in prize money thanks to Lumby Days, N.O.R.D, The Blue Ox Pub and Hubert's Restaurant.
Many other Prizes were also donated and given out thanks to The Lumby Air Force, North Wingwww.NorthWing.com , Wills Wingwww.WillsWing.com , Vincene Mullerwww.MullerWindSports.com and Raven Aviation Ltd. www.RavenAviation.ca
Thanks again to all the entrants for supporting this event, Tonya for the scoring, all the landing judges, volunteers, musicians, landowners and the party clean up crew and Rick Holstein for the new trophy and picknic table.

The Lumby Air Force has decided, at the fall meeting, that they will be placing a bid for the 2010 Nationals.
A date has not yet been decided. Probably early-mid July. Towing may be an option at that time as well.
